What happens when a state ties their health care to paperwork?
New Jersey is about to find out. Under the 2025 federal reconciliation law (also known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act), states must condition Medicaid coverage on new work reporting requirements starting January 1, 2027. The policy will add hurdles for hundreds of thousands of New Jersey residents, with coverage on the line for people who miss a deadline or fall through an administrative crack.
