October 5, 2009: Newspaper report

The decline of New Jersey’s news industry was the theme today at an event marking the release of NJPP’s new report, Less News is Bad News: The Media Crisis and New Jersey’s News Deficit.

With the economy still in a recession, it’s no surprise that the newspaper industry- like many businesses – is consolidating and laying off staff. For New Jersey this is particularly worrisome, as it creates a news deficit that residents can ill afford.

“We’ve been hearing stories of how news coverage in the state is declining,” said Ingrid Reed of the Eagleton Institute of Politics. “With this new study, we have the facts that can marshal support for new ways to address the problem.”
