Below is a statement from New Jersey Policy Perspective president Gordon MacInnes on the ongoing debate over how to fund open space preservation, in particular SCR-165, which is before the Senate Environment and Energy Committee today.

“We all want to ensure New Jersey preserves open space, increases recreational opportunities, acquires more Blue Acres, preserves our historic treasures and protects working farms. But a constitutional dedication of existing revenues is not the best way to proceed.

The state budget is already strained and many of the state’s revenues have already been dedicated to specific programs. Diverting around $200 million a year for 30 years would greatly hamper New Jersey’s ability to not only pay for the services it already requires, but to invest in expanded programs that could grow the economy, create opportunity and plant the seeds of shared prosperity.”
