From the Times of Trenton, July 17, 2012:

Household appliance maker Conair Corp., whose world headquarters is based here, has revived plans for a 450,000-square-foot expansion of its warehouse and distribution operations, after being offered incentives worth more than $26 million to remain in New Jersey. …

Though the influx of money and jobs may be a boon to Conair and East Windsor, critics of the grant program said the threats of companies to leave the state should be met with greater skepticism.

“The real problem is that it’s a matter of judgment,” NJPP president Gordon MacInnes tells the Times. “When Conair threatens to move its distribution network to Arizona, that is a threat that probably should not receive the rapid and generous response that it got, because you’re not talking about comparable opportunities.”

He adds that New Jersey has competitive advantages for distributors who want cheap access to markets on the East Coast that are some of the most active and concentrated markets in the world.

“If you have 10,000 widgets and you want to reach customers, you’re going to have an easier time reaching those customers,” he says.
